The Daughters of the American Revolution NSDAR have long celebrated the courage and sacrifice of our patriot ancestors. But what about the women who risked everything for the cause of liberty, often in secret and away from the battlefield? We are thrilled to highlight a remarkable book that brings these hidden stories to light: “Spies, Soldiers, Couriers, and Saboteurs: Women of the American Revolution.” Even more exciting, the author, K.M. Waldvogel, is a long-time friend of our very own Eau Claire, Wisconsin, NSDAR, Chapter Regent, Ruth Anderson!

This personal connection makes sharing this book with our members and community even more special. “Spies, Soldiers, Couriers, and Saboteurs” delves into the inspiring and often dangerous roles women played in securing our nation’s independence. These are tales of courage that go far beyond the well-known stories, introducing readers to the female spies, soldiers, couriers, and saboteurs who were instrumental to the Revolutionary War effort.

Did you know that some women, disguised as men, fought on the front lines? Or that others were masters of espionage, gathering crucial intelligence right under the noses of British officers? The book vividly portrays these real-life heroines, offering a fresh perspective on the history we cherish. Each chapter unfolds the story of a different woman, bringing their bravery to life with engaging and well-researched narratives.
Author K.M. Waldvogel, a former teacher with a deep passion for American history, was inspired to write the book after realizing how few stories of women’s contributions to the Revolution were readily available. Her background in education shines through her ability to make history accessible and exciting for all ages. A Wisconsin native, Waldvogel is a member of the Wisconsin Writers Association and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Our chapter was recently honored to experience her passion firsthand. On Saturday, September 6th, 2025, she came to the Eau Claire Library to speak privately with the ladies of our Eau Claire Daughters of the American Revolution chapter. It was wonderful to hear her discuss the book and be able to have one-on-one discussions with the author herself. K.M. Waldvogel was a wealth of knowledge and a joy to listen to, making the experience a memorable one for all who attended.
For anyone passionate about American history, women’s history, or simply looking for an inspiring read, “Spies, Soldiers, Couriers, and Saboteurs” is a must-have for your bookshelf. It’s a powerful reminder that the fight for freedom was a collective effort, and the contributions of these courageous women deserve to be celebrated.
We encourage you to support a talented author with local ties and enrich your understanding of our nation’s founding. You can purchase your copy of “Spies, Soldiers, Couriers, and Saboteurs” through the Paul Revere House online store.
